Oklahoma News Report

In this week's ONR, Oklahoma's murder rate reached near-record highs in 2012, while Oklahoma's other major metro area, Tulsa, was at lower rate than usual. We look at what's causing the disparity in numbers, and what's being done to prevent violent deaths across the state. The Pinnacle Plan meant to restructure the Oklahoma Department of Human Services went into effect last July, but it still has a ways to go to be fully implemented. Multiple Sclerosis can strike anyone at anytime, but a cure remains elusive. While drugs are available to slow the disease's progression, the cost remains out of reach for some. Plus, the Supreme Court steps into one of Oklahoma's ongoing water wars, Organizational Day, and a look at a historic Tulsa building, on this ONR.

Blended Gasoline: E-15

Featured in Top Stories

Ethanol has been fueling much debate over gas, efficiency and prices, but one thing is for certain--almost any gas station carries petroleum blended with it. Now a higher blend is available, E-15, which contains 15 percent alcohol. It's not available in Oklahoma yet, but drivers traveling out of state should be aware of the pros and cons of this fuel.

Skimming over the ground, a photographer with infrared gear hangs out a plane and surreptitiously snaps off a few frames. Miles overhead, a satellite receives a signal and starts gathering footage of tanks below. Both are sending their information and images to groups looking to buy low, sell high. Sound like something out of a James Bond film? Maybe, but it's also a description of what's actually going on right now in Cushing, Oklahoma. Investors are scrutinizing the amount of oil being stored in Cushing's oil tanks in hopes of selling it for a profit. We spoke with StateImpact's Joe Wertz, who has been following this story, about these crude oil spy games.

More state fleet vehicles powered by compressed natural gas will soon be on the road. Governor Mary Fallin made that announcement along with Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper last week at the Governor's Energy Conference in Oklahoma City. It was at that conference a year ago that the two governors announced a plan to push for more CNG-fueled cars for their fleets. In that year they've seen over twenty states join their initiative and Detroit automakers heed their call to manufacture these cars. In this ONR Extra, we take you to the conference and the governors' remarks regarding their success.
