Political Operatives

Candidates may stand alone during their speeches and appearances, but propping them up is a veritable army of staff members, doing everything from managing the day-to-day managerial operations, to crafting those same messages the candidates deliver. This is an excerpt from the Oklahoma News Report.

On this episode of the ONR, voters have been urged to 'get out the vote,' and some are doing so earlier than others as early voting grows in popularity. But it's having a profound impact on the campaign season and it's length. Campaign season also means campaign speeches and ads. We take a look at the world of political operatives and their role in the world of politics. One of the groups trying to be reached by those campaign messages this year? Hispanics. They now are the largest minority in the United States, and as such are a strong voting block. In our Oklahoma Forum excerpt, we discuss the Latino community and voting. Then our reporter Cathy Tatom visits 'Little Mexico' in Heavener, Oklahoma, to see the impact of a new Latino population in the town. Plus, business news, lessons from the Dust Bowl, and silo art projects, on this ONR.

People often think of the Dust Bowl sweeping away the Oklahoma topsoil in furious winds, but rarely do people think about that same soil being washed away due to erosion. But this was an issue and a lesson taken from the Dust Bowl, one that's led to the creation of flood control dams.

On this ONR, we travel the seedy road of human trafficking in Oklahoma, and speak with the people behind the groups aimed at stopping it. As October 1st kicked off Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, we speak with Paige Mills-Haag and Courtney Hamar with the OKC-YWCA about breaking the cycle of abuse. It's official--a longstanding employer in Vinita will shutter its doors before the end of the year, and now the burden of offsetting the loss of jobs falls to the town. Plus, CNG state vehicles, crude oil spy games, state fairs and sculptors, on this ONR.

Skimming over the ground, a photographer with infrared gear hangs out a plane and surreptitiously snaps off a few frames. Miles overhead, a satellite receives a signal and starts gathering footage of tanks below. Both are sending their information and images to groups looking to buy low, sell high. Sound like something out of a James Bond film? Maybe, but it's also a description of what's actually going on right now in Cushing, Oklahoma. Investors are scrutinizing the amount of oil being stored in Cushing's oil tanks in hopes of selling it for a profit. We spoke with StateImpact's Joe Wertz, who has been following this story, about these crude oil spy games.
