Lessons Learned from Extreme Weather

Weather this spring was especially violent - even by Oklahoma standards. Tornadoes cut through many communities, delivering devastation, loss and fear. Today, we discuss the lessons learned from the recent violent storms - what to expect going forward, how to prepare and how to respond, with our guests: Albert Ashwood, Director of the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management; Don Burgess, Research Meteorologist with the University of Oklahoma and the National Severe Storms Lab; Steve Eddy, City Manager of the City of Moore; and, Jeff Snyder, storm chaser, researcher and Ph.D. candidate at the OU School of Meteorology.

6-7-13

In this episode of the ONR, we take a look at the recent tornado damage near El Reno, and the twister's recent upgrade by officials. Our Mission: Failure coverage continues as a former veteran center employee is charged with two counts of second degree murder in the death of former patients. But faulty care at VA homes isn't the only mistreatment befalling soldiers; mental health and suicides continue to be rampant, and people continue to look for ways to help the nation's service men and women. Plus, a look behind the doors of the state's premier police academy, a check of the state's drought condition, and a listen to one of Oklahoma City's most famous musicians, on this ONR.

Extreme Weather and Agriculture

Oklahoma is ranked number nine among top states that have suffered property losses from disasters in the last decade - considered the most at-risk states in the U.S. FEMA rates our state third in the number of disaster declarations since the mid-50's, behind only Texas and California. The extreme weather takes its toll in many ways, and here to discuss it and how it's affecting agriculture, natural resources and conservation are: Clay Pope, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts; Al Sutherland, OSU-Oklahoma Mesonet Agricultural Coordinator; Mike Thralls, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Conservation Commission; and, Mark Gregory, Area Extension Agronomy Specialist with the OSU Extension Office in southwest Oklahoma.
