Power Grid (10:29)
Featured in Top Stories
The power grid that feeds electricity to homes and businesses across the state is under heavy stress this summer. So far there have been no reports of rolling black outs or brown-outs and it appears the demand is not outstripping the supply of electricity. But the need for more power is growing, which means expansion is coming to get that power to the market place. Unlike Oklahoma, most of Texas is not connected to the energy grid that covers nearly all of the states east of the Rockies. The electric reliability council of Texas underestimated demand for power this summer, which caused disruptions to large users and narrowly avoided rolling blackouts. According to energy experts, the power problems in Texas showed the vulnerabilities of their de-regulated market and the state's inability to get help from other places when it runs short of electricity. Dick Pryor also spoke with Corporation Commissioner Bob Anthony about Oklahoma's electric infrastructure.
