In this ONR, Bob Sands and M. Scott Carter from The Journal Record team up for a special in-depth report on Oklahoma’s long term care facilities for veterans. Michael and Susan Kraft share the story of their father’s experience at the Claremore Veteran’s Center. Major General Rita Aragon and former Medical Director of the Norman Veterans Center, Dr. Pamela Hiti weigh in on some of the problems and possible solutions to accusations of neglect and abuse at veteran’s facilities. Proposed tax cuts and falling natural gas prices are creating uncertainty as legislators begin the complex task of drafting a state budget. Sen. Clark Jolley (R-Edmond) and Rep. Earl Sears (R-Bartlesville), who lead the Senate and House Appropriations Committees, talk about some of the unique challenges they face this year. Sen. Brian Bingman (R-Supulpa), Rep. Kris Steele (R-Shawnee), and Rep. Scott Inman (D-Del City) also voice their concerns. Music and arts education programs face more cuts in public schools, forcing many districts to rely on the private sector for creative instruction. The Tulsa Symphony recently paid internationally renowned music teacher Roberta Guaspari to teach some workshops in the city. It’s one example of private organizations trying to provide opportunities for music and arts education. And our partners at E-Capitol and The Journal Record have updates on other trending stories in government and business this week.

Obama in Cushing

President Obama made a stopover in Oklahoma this week as part of his four-state energy tour. The president used a pipe yard near Cushing as a back-drop to defend his call for a diversified energy policy and announce his administration is fast-tracking completion of the southern leg of Trans-Canada's Keystone XL pipeline. While in Oklahoma, the president explained how oil production is a key element of what he calls his "all-of-the-above" energy policy. David May, Director of Energy Programs at the Oklahoma City University Meinders School of Business joined Dick Pryor to discuss the president’s speech.

The Grid-Bridges

For many years Oklahoma has been at the top of the list for the most structurally deficient bridges in the nation. Despite increased emphasis on repairing bridges in the last several years, there are still 706 structurally deficient highway bridges in Oklahoma. Governor Mary Fallin has a plan to get all those bridges fixed in seven years, and bills easily moving through the legislature set up the financial framework to meet the Governor's timeline.

Military Spending Cuts

The impact of federal budget cuts to reduce the national debt is now being felt at Oklahoma military bases. Hundreds of military jobs are being consolidated with operations elsewhere as the Defense Department begins meeting the goal of cutting $480-billion in spending over the next 10 years. Still looming ahead however, is a possible military spending cut that Air Force officials warn would have a much larger effect on the nation and Oklahoma.
