Oklahoma News Report

In this episode, Oklahoma U.S. Representative Tom Cole lays out the local impact of sequestration. One group who will be impacted? The middle class, a group that is increasingly shrinking--and being squeezed by economic issues besides. In northern Oklahoma, cattlemen in Osage County face a particular issue as they fight to protect their lands and their cattle. Meanwhile, small towns across the state find themselves in broader food deserts and local groceries struggle to keep their doors open. And a local government agency that defines the very word, 'streamlined.' Plus, high-tech hay theft deterrent, a state capitol roundup, and saying goodbye to an Oklahoma acting legend, on this ONR.

In this episode of the ONR, we explore school security, and what measures lawmakers and educators are considering to keep area schools safe. In other nearby schools, the problem is less that of security and more of administrative funding. With a cap on administrative spending, some small school districts are considering merging administrations to save money. In our continuing drought coverage, we visit Altus-Lugert Lake in southwestern Oklahoma, where low water levels are affecting area agriculture. Plus, freshmen legislators, weekly capitol updates, old-school sky diving, Thunder fever and more on this ONR.

On this ONR, worker's comp reform has become a key part of republican lawmaker's agenda this session, which could lead to major changes for Oklahoma workers. Also on legislators' agenda: curbing the high number of Oklahomans driving without insurance. Good childcare is a conundrum for families across the state, but some parents find themselves in a gap--earning too much to receive assistance, and too little to afford childcare on their own. It's a problem hitting not just families, but childcare centers as well. And an agency out to clean up the state's defunct drilling sites. Plus, towns get 'Entrepreneur Ready,' stitching together love for veterans, and local poets break down the spirit behind the pen--or, the laptop, on this ONR.
