Ken Burns Dust Bowl Pt 1

Poor farm land conservation, drought and high winds came together in the southern plains in the 1930's to create an environmental disaster of unprecedented proportions: the dust bowl. April fourteenth is the anniversary of the day that most dramatically illustrated the devastation suffered during the dirty thirties: Black Sunday was April 14, 1935. The dust bowl is the latest historical documentary film directed and produced by Ken Burns for PBS. It will air on OETA in November. Dick Pryor talked to Ken Burns, and asked him why he chose to do a documentary on "The Dust Bowl."

Fish Kill

It was sight no one had ever seen before, thousands of huge catfish lying dead on the sand bars of the red river. First reports blamed the obvious - the long hot summer coupled with a prolonged drought causing a lack of oxygen in the water. But eight months later, after tests on water samples in state and federal laboratories, the cause of the huge fish kill remains a mystery.

EZ Go Wind Power (3:39)

According to the department of commerce, there are 880 commercial-scale wind turbines across the state. Each is capable of generating enough electricity to power at least 250 homes. But not everyone wanting to tap into wind power is doing it on a grand scale. They are turning to a type of wind generation that isn't regulated by the state, and in many communities, doesn't even require a permit. Micro wind turbines are also popping up at private homes, including the Governor's mansion. The company that manufactures energy balls makes one about half the size of those installed at the travel plazas for home use.
