Horse Slaughter

Oklahoma is horse country. It may also become home to a facility that processes horse meat for human consumption. Now that the USDA can once again inspect such plants, support has grown in the state legislature to use tax breaks and other incentives to encourage someone to build a horse slaughter facility here. The last U.S. rendering plant closed five years ago and since that time, thousands of Oklahoma horses have gone to slaughter in Canada and Mexico.

But this year big efforts are underway to ensure less holiday waste is burned or buried. Especially the toxic trash that results from chucking out old electronics.

Feral Hogs

Problems with feral hogs were first reported in rural southeastern Oklahoma in the 1980's. Now, landowners in all 77 counties are becoming aware of the damage these wild mammals can cause. Feral hogs are even starting to move into urban areas, just as they have in Texas. As the population of feral swine explodes, the Department of Agriculture is trying to find ways to reduce their numbers. But, it isn't easy.

It's a group willing to work just for food, around the clock, seven days a week to get the job done.
