Gov. Mary Fallin says she wants to boost the state's economy by increasing the number of college graduates. Oklahoma produces about 27,000 college graduates a year, but Fallin wants to increase that by 1,700. The Governor and members of her cabinet discussed the plan during a town hall meeting at Oklahoma State University. Here's part of the discussion in this ONR Extra.

As classrooms begin to fill up this semester, students are bringing with them a number of health issues that will impact their ability to learn. They range from lack of sleep or poor nutrition to thoughts of suicide and substance abuse. These are all problems that may be noticed for the first time inside the school house. Oklahoma mental health officials tell us substance abuse, teen suicide and early sexual activity are stubborn problems that the state has shown little, if any, ability to deal with over the last several years.

According to the national Kids Count program more than 20,000 Oklahoma children were involved in some form of early childhood education. A new coalition looks to increase that number. Oklahoma Champions for Early Opportunity is bringing business leaders together to invest in early childhood education. Debra Anderson is the executive director of Smart Start Oklahoma, which is affiliated with OK-CEO. She joined Dick Pryor to discuss this new initiative.

For a growing number of public school students, going back to class this year will mean turning on their computer at home. On-line education has grown so fast that total virtual enrollment isn't yet known. Preliminary data shows on-line learning has attracted students from 45 of the state's 77 counties. And it is proving to be a boon for some struggling rural school districts.

Oklahoma public school teachers are nearly the lowest paid in the nation, currently ranked 48th. Despite that, the state ranks 9th in the country for the total number of teachers who have reached nationally board certified status. Under state law, that distinction is supposed to come with a five thousand dollar bonus. However, that bonus is no longer funded because of a decision by the state board of education.

There are nearly 50 new laws passed by state lawmakers that will be in effect by the end of this year. Among them are statues that end social promotion of students not reading at grade level, and the implementation of an “A” through “F” grading scale for overall school performance. As a new school year begins, a flurry of reforms and state funding cuts have created a new educational landscape in Oklahoma. The changes are being met with mixed emotions and increasing tension. Oklahoma’s new state superintendent of public instruction Janet Barresi has promised a makeover of pre-k through twelve education. And, from her first meeting with the state board of education, she has faced controversy. The latest involves the board’s decision to strip nearly 34-million dollars in funding from teacher and support personnel health benefits. The budget cuts and new laws have stirred deep concerns within Oklahoma’s education community.
