The death last year of five-year-old Serenity Deal at the hands of her father has renewed calls for reform of the State Department of Human Services. Serenity had been placed in her father's custody by DHS caseworkers, despite evidence of severe physical abuse. The Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy, and members of Serenity's family, are urging legislation to stem the tide of child abuse to ensure such a tragedy doesn't happen again. In this ONR Extra, here is more on what's being called "The Serenity Project".

DHS Settlement

Featured in Top Stories

The motto for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services is "stronger families build stronger lives". But some families are so broken, they can't be made stronger and it is the children who suffer. A 2008 lawsuit against DHS claimed the state agency was often only making children suffer more abuse at the hands of foster parents and case workers who were supposed to watch over them. A trial examining those allegations has been averted, with DHS agreeing to a settlement that requires the agency to develop a plan to better serve Oklahoma’s most vulnerable citizens.
