Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people in the United States. Some data indicates bullying is linked to half of all suicides among 10 to 14 year olds. A much-talked about new documentary "Bully" is bringing the depth of the problem to light across the nation, and in Oklahoma and encouraging efforts in schools to address this pervasive problem.

Oklahoma's new approach to improving public schools reduces the role of the federal government, but has not reduced controversy. Our series on addiction examines the effects in Indian country. The documentary "Bully" strikes close to home, highlighting bullying in Oklahoma schools. One of the students featured in the film talks about the problem. And an Oklahoma shelter encourages parents to consider alternatives to rabbits as Easter gifts. All that and more, next on ONR.

Health Insurance for Kids

A new health care debate is underway in the Oklahoma legislature that ties back to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. How to provide health care insurance for about a thousand families who can't get insurance for their infant children? At the heart of the issue is what works best to fix the problem: the free market or government mandates.

DHS Settlement

Featured in Top Stories

The motto for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services is "stronger families build stronger lives". But some families are so broken, they can't be made stronger and it is the children who suffer. A 2008 lawsuit against DHS claimed the state agency was often only making children suffer more abuse at the hands of foster parents and case workers who were supposed to watch over them. A trial examining those allegations has been averted, with DHS agreeing to a settlement that requires the agency to develop a plan to better serve Oklahoma’s most vulnerable citizens.

Women in Recovery

Oklahoma continues to send more women to prison than any other state. 63 percent of them suffer from substance abuse. Despite treatment in prison, many of the women get out, start using again and eventually end up back behind bars. A relatively new therapy is looking at addiction from a gender based perspective. It explores women's childhood traumas as the springboard to their cycle of drug and alcohol abuse.

High tech gadgets are topping holiday wish lists. Most are loaded with games and apps designed to captivate their users. They are also powerful educational instruments. For decades teachers taught the "three r's" using books, papers, pencils and chalkboards. Those methods now share classrooms with high tech devices some fear are more toy than teaching tool, but that educators say are changing the way students learn.

Teen Pregnancy

Featured in Top Stories

In 2008 more than twice as many teenage girls gave birth in Oklahoma as were in the combined fall freshman classes of OU and OSU. So far this year more than 5,000 teens have given birth. For one in five it wasn't her first child. That has the health department and some school districts looking for new ways to prevent teen pregnancies. In both 2010 and 2011 the State Health Department spent just under $430,000 on teen pregnancy prevention education. Since participation is not mandatory, only schools in Ottawa and Pittsburg counties used the programs. In January, schools in Hughes, Choctaw and McCurtain counties will begin offering courses. Schools in Tulsa and Oklahoma counties use the federally funded "prep" program.

NCLB Waiver

Featured in Top Stories

Oklahoma educators are waiting to see whether requirements of the No Child Left Behind law will be waived by the federal government. A waiver would allow Oklahoma to avoid the requirements of a law that has been widely criticized by educators since it was enacted. However, the waiver request itself is being criticized in part because of the power it would give state officials to take-over locally-controlled public schools.
