School Safety Commission
Less than a week after the deadly shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, legislative leaders formed the non-partisan Oklahoma Commission on School Security. The commission moved quickly to develop findings and recommendations for Oklahoma schools. 22 people served on that commission and three of them join us: Eleanor Goetzinger, Behavior Specialist for Oklahoma City Public Schools; Roger Webb, Headmaster of Oklahoma Christian School and former President of the University of Central Oklahoma; and, Kim Carter, director of the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security.

On this episode of the ONR, legislation that would allow horse slaughter facilities to operate in the state moves forward, but opponents are rallying against what they see as a brutal and cruel business. Votes in the Oklahoma legislature sometimes fall along party lines, but the divide is strongly felt between the rural and the urban. And one particular issue is key to Oklahoma's rural caucus. The need for quality nurses is on the rise nationwide, and that includes Oklahoma. Low math and science scores don't bode well for the Sooner state's employment prospects as more jobs shift to fields requiring strong backgrounds in those topics.
