It's rare to find someone for whom party lines mean nothing, but Robert Gates is a rare person. During his tenure as Secretary of Defense and Director of the CIA, Gates worked under eight different presidents from both sides of the aisle. Gates recently spoke in Oklahoma City, as part of the Spears School of Business Speakers Series. In this exclusive interview, Gates talks about how budget problems at home can hinder efforts abroad.

It's the local election that's drawing national coverage: the race for Oklahoma's 2nd Congressional District seat. The battle is between Republican Markwayne Mullin and Democrat Rob Wallace, but both contend this isn't just a fight for a political post. One says it's a choice between right and wrong, and the other claims it's a choice between socialism and the republic.

Foreign Policy

Foreign policy was front and center in the final presidential debate. While most American voters remain focused on domestic issues, what happens on the international stage can quickly become any administration's primary concern. Whether it's trade, the environment or national security, international relations have a profound impact on u.s. policy, affecting all of us. So we discussed U.S. foreign policy with our guests: Mohamed Daadaoui, Associate Professor of Political Science at Oklahoma City University. Louis Furmanski, Chair of the Political Science Department at the University of Central Oklahoma. Peter Gries, Director of the Institute for U.S.-China Issues at the University of Oklahoma. And Mike Boettcher, ABC news correspondent and Correspondent in Residence at the OU Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
