A legislative panel exploring the impact of the federal health care law on Oklahoma is expected to recommend development of some type of health care exchange--but only to the minimum extent necessary to comply with the Affordable Health Care Act. The joint committee on federal health care law heard testimony this week on non-profit clinics and health exchanges, where residents could shop for and buy health insurance. The federal law requires states to have a health care exchange set up by 2014. Here is more of that testimony in this ONR Extra.

Every year, thousands of Oklahomans learn they have a disease which poses a risk of blindness, loss of limbs, and even death. If current trends continue, it's estimated that one in three adults will suffer some form of diabetes by the year 2050. While there is still no cure, an effort is underway to raise awareness about the disease, and encourage Oklahomans to adopt healthier lifestyles to head off this epidemic.

In 1985, 256,000 Oklahomans received food stamps each month. But in the past decade the number of recipients has increased dramatically. Last month set a new record with more than 625-thousand people getting help to buy food. That's about one in six Oklahomans and many of those are children.

According to mental health professionals one out of every five people will experience a mental health issue in their lifetime. Anyone who has dealt with mental illness knows it can result in the loss of a job and the inability to manage daily living. And sometimes it leads to homelessness. Getting the proper care is also difficult because of reduced state funding and a public health system that is hard to navigate. We talked to Dan Straughan, executive director of the homeless alliance of oklahoma city about the mentally ill and homeless.
