The extreme heat brings a double dose of discomfort. Being outside in stifling temperatures is bad enough, but if you stay inside where it's air conditioned, soaring electric bills are the price you pay for relief. It's even worse for thousands of people who either lack air conditioning or have just enough to make one or two rooms livable. That means finding someplace, anyplace, to stay cool during the day and waiting until late in the evening for the house to cool off enough to get a night's sleep.

As classrooms begin to fill up this semester, students are bringing with them a number of health issues that will impact their ability to learn. They range from lack of sleep or poor nutrition to thoughts of suicide and substance abuse. These are all problems that may be noticed for the first time inside the school house. Oklahoma mental health officials tell us substance abuse, teen suicide and early sexual activity are stubborn problems that the state has shown little, if any, ability to deal with over the last several years.

THERE ARE NO STATEWIDE FIGURES ON HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TREATED FOR HEAT STRESS OR STROKE, BUT NUMBERS FROM THE STATES TWO LARGEST METRO AREAS SHOW HOW WIDESPREAD THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN. 146 PEOPLE TREATED FOR TOO MUCH HEAT IN TULSA; 143 IN OKLAHOMA CITY AND THAT'S JUST SINCE THE FIRST OF JUNE.
