New figures from the Oklahoma Department of Human Services show the number of Oklahomans needing help to put food on the table each day has just reached an all time high. And a national study shows 17% of Oklahomans are "food insecure". The face of hunger in Oklahoma often involves the working poor and their children.

Oklahoma continues to send more women to prison than any other state. 63 percent of them suffer from substance abuse. Despite treatment in prison, many of the women get out, start using again and eventually end up back behind bars. A relatively new therapy is looking at addiction from a gender based perspective. It explores women's childhood traumas as the springboard to their cycle of drug and alcohol abuse. According to the institute for child advocacy there are 27,000 children of incarcerated parents in Oklahoma. Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Oklahoma finds mentors to help these children break the inter-generational cycle of crime through the "Amachi" program. However due to federal budget cuts that program is now in jeopardy. We spoke with Jaclyn Cosgrove who is covering this issue for Oklahoma Watch.

There are hundreds of Oklahomans now in county jails and state prisons who are mentally ill. They end up there for breaking a law, but in many cases that crime was the result of a mental illness that has gone untreated. With the Oklahoma County jail now recognized as the state's largest mental health facility, a prosecutor and a public defender find themselves in the role of trying to find justice in a new way.

Analysis of millions of drug test samples has produced more evidence of the plague that has become methamphetamine abuse in Oklahoma. Of the top 9 states where the work-force is high on meth, Oklahoma came in number three, at 240-percent above the national average. But there may be even bigger addiction problems in Oklahoma’s work force.

It was almost a century ago that a mining camp was established in far northeastern Oklahoma, in an area that would become the town of Picher. By the 1920's Picher was the center of the largest lead and zinc mining operation in the nation. But now, Picher does not exist. The town died from contamination, by-products of mining, which forced the federal government to close Picher and relocate its residents. And while almost all the people are gone, much of the hazard still remains.

Prescription drug abuse is the nation's fastest-growing drug problem. The centers for disease control and prevention calls it an epidemic. In this follow-up to a story we did on drugs in the workplace, we found that the epidemic is fueled in part by doctors who over-prescribe highly addictive narcotics.

As most Oklahoma children are settling back into the school year their biggest worries are who they'll sit with at lunch or if the other kids will like them. But for a growing number of students they're facing much bigger concerns such as where they'll sleep that night or if they'll have food to eat after school. The State Department of Education is reporting more than 15,000 students are considered homeless according to federal guidelines. And the trend does not seem to be slowing down.

ONR Extra Medicaid Changes (2:34)

State health officials estimate an additional 140 thousand Oklahomans will enroll in Medicaid when the new federal health care law takes effect. The projected cost is an additional 24 million dollars a year. The figures came from the state health care authority during the first meetings of lawmakers on how the new law will affect the state. The state health department also outlined the contributing factors to Oklahoma’s poor health rankings. The legislative committee plans four more meetings on health care and the new federal law, with the next meeting scheduled October 5 in Tulsa.
