With 2011 giving way to 2012, we decided to look back at some of the top stories from the last year on ONR. 2011 was a year that saw the state suffer the effects of blue-green algae growth in several lakes and widespread extreme drought. It was a year when thousands of Oklahomans went off to war, earthquakes shook the ground, and jobs and the economy remained a major concern. It was also a year when a new slate of statewide elected officials took office and the legislature passed some bills that had stalled - among them, a bill to regulate puppy mills.

As Boeing announces a move of jobs to Oklahoma, the full-court press is on to keep the American Airlines maintenance facility from leaving the state in a company restructuring. A legislative task force wants to eliminate tax exemptions to further reduce the state income tax. But will the change actually save people money on their tax bill? Out with the old, in with the new. The agency tasked with removing barriers to employment for the disabled is now putting one up. At least temporarily. The Department of Rehabilitation Services is telling some new applicants they won't immediately receive help they need to get a job. Instead they'll go on a waiting list.

Teen Smoking

Oklahoma consistently ranks among the unhealthiest states in the nation. And, a big reason for that is smoking. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Oklahoma ranks 47th among all states in the number of people who smoke. However, the number of smokers is on the decline. Eleven years ago, Oklahoma’s smoking rate stood at 29%. Since then, it's reached an historic low of 23.7%. Yet, the use of tobacco is growing in one group of the population - the state's youth.

Health is a big problem in Oklahoma. According to a study published in the new England Journal Of Medicine, Oklahoma ranks as the state facing the most challenged in meeting the health care needs of its citizens in the next few years. Our state doesn't have enough doctors to serve the additional 500,000 patients who will be newly-insured through Medicaid or private insurance by the year 2014. The dilemma caused by lack of doctors is expected to be especially acute in rural Oklahoma. The shortage of doctors isn't the only health care issue facing rural Oklahoma. Dentists for the disabled and elderly in need of treatment, or d-dent as it's commonly known, has been providing free dental care for more than a quarter of a century. Now that service is threatened by a lack of state funding. We with state impact correspondent Logan Layden about the work of D-Dent, and how the loss of funding is putting many Oklahomans' oral health at risk.

Youth Addiction

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Oklahoma has the highest reported painkiller abuse in the nation. The Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs says the number of overdose deaths have increased more than 100 percent in the last ten years. A record 715 people died in Oklahoma just last year from prescription drug overdoses. Law enforcement says it is an epidemic that is now grabbing Oklahoma’s young people and in many cases won't let go.
