State Pensions
Featured in Top Stories
The public pension system for state workers is on the road to financial recovery, but there were trade-offs to get there. State pensions have largely been styled to provide a stable retirement for public servants who bypassed higher wages in the private sector and worked for taxpayers for much less. The average state employee's pension is around $15,000 a year and because of new laws that helped the pension system's viability, that is where that figure is likely to stay for years to come.

Broken Arrow Casino
Featured in Top Stories
Opponents of a new Indian casino under construction in Broken Arrow say the project could set state and national precedents for where Indian casinos can be located. That's because the tribe building the casino doesn't own the land where the casino sits, it is leasing the land. The project is now getting close scrutiny from local, state and federal officials. At the National Congress of American Indians this week, Assistant Interior Secretary for Indian Affairs, Larry Echo Hawk, said his agency may have a future "decision point" on the red clay casino. But for now, he urged patience to allow the national Indian gaming commission to move forward with its process to determine if the site is eligible for gaming. He said his agency's future involvement with the issue will depend on the NIGC’s decision.
