With the Oklahoma County jail now recognized as the state's largest mental health facility, a prosecutor and a public defender find themselves in the role of trying to find justice in a new way.

Of the top 9 states where the work-force is high on meth, Oklahoma came in number three, at 240-percent above the national average. Young men of all sizes, shapes and physical condition are preparing for the one sure thing that says it is fall in Oklahoma. It's football season. However, the summer heat is still bearing down on those practice fields and the players, raising concerns about their health. Heat has claimed the lives of young Oklahoma football players before, one last year, and this year coaches and their assistants are very aware of the danger the lingering summer heat poses to their teams. Dan Newman is the head athletic trainer at Union High School in Tulsa, and President of the Oklahoma Athletic Trainers Association. Dick Pryor spoke with him about the risks of heat illness and concussion faced by high school athletes.

Thousands of low income elderly and disabled Oklahomans have conditions that qualify them for nursing home care at state expense. Yet, a survey by AARP found 90% of older Oklahomans would rather get care at home. That's what the Department of Human Services "Advantage Program" is designed to do. It lets medicaid-eligible patients choose at-home care, which is saving the state hundreds of millions of dollars each year.

As classrooms begin to fill up this semester, students are bringing with them a number of health issues that will impact their ability to learn. They range from lack of sleep or poor nutrition to thoughts of suicide and substance abuse. These are all problems that may be noticed for the first time inside the school house. Oklahoma mental health officials tell us substance abuse, teen suicide and early sexual activity are stubborn problems that the state has shown little, if any, ability to deal with over the last several years.
