Congress reconvened for a short stint starting September 10th, but not much was accomplished before they broke for another recess. Among the bills left unattended was the Farm Bill, a beleaguered piece of legislation that's been reworked by both the House and the Senate and ultimately still left undecided. We spoke to the President of the Oklahoma Farm Bureau, Mike Spradling, about the legislation and what it's holdup means for local farmers.

On this episode of the ONR, oil production is booming in Oklahoma, and that means employment for many across the state. But the work, while plentiful, can be dangerous, as we learn from StateImpact's Joe Wertz who has been reporting on the pitfalls of the oil field. In Tulsa, researchers from across the United States and around the globe gather to work out a harrowing problem: why does child abuse keep occurring, and what can be done to stop it? Plus, we speak with one of the nation's last political cartoonists and the news cycles that inspire him, visit Oklahoma wine country, and get lost in a maze--or is it maize?--of Thunder, on this ONR.

Caring for livestock has long been part of Oklahoma's agricultural industry, but growing global demand for meat has led to cases of deplorable conditions at livestock production companies, bringing the companies under the scrutiny of their customers--and the Kirkpatrick Foundation. The group is launching a new initiative aimed at promoting animal welfare across the state, and helping them kick off their campaign is Dr. Bernard Rollin, the father of modern veterinary ethics. We spoke to Dr. Rollin about his work in animal welfare, and how livestock producers can pair the demands of consumers with the need for humane treatment of animals.

On this episode of ONR, we take a look at the drought gripping the state and many of it's industries. The heat is hitting agriculture hard, but so is a shortage of young farmers replacing retiring baby boomers. But there are some who say they can't think of a better career to pursue than that which requires a tractor. The Olympics might be in London, but some Olympians are right here in Oklahoma, recalling the joy of going for the gold. Plus, an all-new take on meals on wheels, animals get a helping hand, and we remember a local legislative legend on this ONR.

It's a stark contrast to just a few years ago, when only three wineries and a scant few vinyards existed in the state. But new laws have helped resuscitate one of the state's oldest agricultural ventures.
