The extreme heat brings a double dose of discomfort. Being outside in stifling temperatures is bad enough, but if you stay inside where it's air conditioned, soaring electric bills are the price you pay for relief. It's even worse for thousands of people who either lack air conditioning or have just enough to make one or two rooms livable. Thousands of low income elderly and disabled Oklahomans have conditions that qualify them for nursing home care at state expense. Yet, a survey by AARP found 90% of older Oklahomans would rather get care at home. That's what the Department of Human Services "Advantage Program" is designed to do. It lets medicaid-eligible patients choose at-home care, which is saving the state hundreds of millions of dollars each year.
