They are known as the 'near poor', people teetering on the edge of homelessness and hunger but for now living what is largely viewed as a middle income life. Anyone whose income is 50% or less above the poverty line falls into the near poor category, just an illness or job loss away from living in poverty. One in three Oklahomans already live below the poverty line and now growing numbers of others are falling into the near poor category - making too much money for government assistance but not enough to pay the bills.

Anyone who has dealt with mental illness knows it can result in the loss of a job and the inability to manage daily living. And sometimes it leads to homelessness.
