In 1985, 256,000 Oklahomans received food stamps each month. But in the past decade the number of recipients has increased dramatically. Last month set a new record with more than 625-thousand people getting help to buy food. That's about one in six Oklahomans and many of those are children.

According to mental health professionals one out of every five people will experience a mental health issue in their lifetime. Anyone who has dealt with mental illness knows it can result in the loss of a job and the inability to manage daily living. And sometimes it leads to homelessness. Getting the proper care is also difficult because of reduced state funding and a public health system that is hard to navigate. We talked to Dan Straughan, executive director of the homeless alliance of oklahoma city about the mentally ill and homeless.

After retiring in April of last year, Bill Moyers is planning a return to television. The renowned journalist, who has won more than thirty Emmy awards, will launch a new program, "Moyers and Company", in January. The program will be broadcast nationally, and will be seen on OETA Saturdays at 5 pm, beginning in January. Moyers was born in Hugo and grew up in nearby Marshall, Texas. He spoke at Oklahoma City University this week, and while he was here, Dick Pryor spoke with him about his new show.

It's an epidemic reaching crisis proportions. According to the national centers for disease control and prevention, an estimated one out of every 150 children, is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, or A.S.D. Researchers at the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences are taking a team approach to identifying the causes of autism, and they hope to someday find a way to prevent this devastating disease.

Several days ago, the owner of an exotic animal farm in Zanesville, Ohio released more than fifty dangerous wild animals and then committed suicide. What followed was a law enforcement animal hunt to protect citizens in the area. The hunt ended with the killing of most of the animals, and triggered national interest in the exotic animal business. It turns out that five states don't regulate private ownership of dangerous wild animals. Ohio is one of them. And so is Oklahoma

A year from now, America will be just days away from going to the polls to elect a president. In Oklahoma, among the candidates vying for public office there will be more state questions. One issue that will be on that ballot, state question 759, is already motivating people to get organized against it. In 2008 the issue of ending affirmative action was the subject of a petition drive that did not get on the ballot because of problems with the signatures that were gathered. But earlier this year, the state legislature brought the issue back to life in the form of Senate Joint Resolution 15 which is now State Question 759.
