Women's History Month

Featured in Top Stories

March is Women's History Month. In Oklahoma, one organization has worked to improve the quality of life for women for over a century, especially rural women. It got its start in 1910 under the name, "The Home Demonstration Club." Over the years the clubs helped hundreds of thousands of women in all 77-counties learn leadership and practical skills to make life better in their communities and homes.

Drought in Doubt

Featured in Top Stories

A few days of steady, soaking rain have helped dramatically reduce the area of Oklahoma suffering from moderate to exceptional drought. Smaller storms earlier in the year provided little relief to the most parched areas of the state, but recent rains have made a big difference. And, the rain couldn't have come at a better time for Oklahoma’s cattle...and wheat crop.

Child Welfare Rankings

For the last 20 years Oklahoma has consistently remained above the national average for infant mortality. According to the State Health Department, Oklahoma had 7.3 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 2008. That puts Oklahoma 34th among all states. A state public awareness campaign has been underway since 2009 to improve outcomes for our youngest citizens. Too many infants are dying in our state each week. Lack of pre-natal care is just one contributing factor.

Price of Gas

Featured in Top Stories

As gasoline prices continue to rise, the prospects of four dollar a gallon gasoline are real. Oklahoma's average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is now $3.72. Some parts of the country are already topping the four dollar mark, and the summer driving season is still several weeks away. So we wondered: how is the price of gasoline determined? A question that seems simple enough until you try to find someone who can really answer it. We sent Bob Sands and Aaron Byrd out to find that answer and it turned into a case of mission impossible, almost.

As lawmakers work on the state budget, they are also facing a major decision on a multi-million dollar unfinished project. Construction of the American Indian Cultural Center and Museum in Oklahoma City has ground to a halt due to a lack of money. Supporters of the museum say without new funding, the future of the partly constructed facility remains in doubt.
