ONR Extra Health Care Law

Featured in ONR Extras

A legislative panel exploring the impact of the federal health care law on Oklahoma is expected to recommend development of some type of health care exchange--but only to the minimum extent necessary to comply with the Affordable Health Care Act. The joint committee on federal health care law heard testimony this week on non-profit clinics and health exchanges, where residents could shop for and buy health insurance. The federal law requires states to have a health care exchange set up by 2014. Here is more of that testimony in this ONR Extra.

Featured in ONR Extras

A stocky, ground-dwelling bird is at the center of an impending decision which could have a major impact on businesses and industries that operate in northwest Oklahoma. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is currently conducting a study to determine whether the lesser prairie chicken should be listed as an endangered species and receive protection. State officials and business leaders testified at a forum sponsored by U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe--arguing that such a listing could pose major economic development problems in the region. Among those participating in that forum were new wildlife service director Dan Ashe and Oklahoma Secretary of the Environment Gary Sherrer.

The state health department also outlined the contributing factors to Oklahoma’s poor health rankings. The legislative committee plans four more meetings on health care and the new federal law, with the next meeting scheduled October 5 in Tulsa.
