The State Senate has passed a bill that would allow companies that qualify to opt out of the workers compensation system. The proposal would also bar any court or agency from creating rules or regulations that in any way tell an employer what their workers comp plan should cover. The death last year of five-year-old Serenity Deal at the hands of her father has renewed calls for reform of the State Department of Human Services. Serenity had been placed in her father's custody by DHS caseworkers, despite evidence of severe physical abuse. The Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy, and members of Serenity's family, are urging legislation to stem the tide of child abuse to ensure such a tragedy doesn't happen again. June marks the fortieth anniversary of the break-in at the Democratic National Headquarters at the Watergate Hotel in Washington D.C. Two Washington Post cub reporters, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, broke the story which eventually led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon in 1974. This week the veteran journalists and authors spoke about their investigation at the University of Tulsa. Both say they are still analyzing "The Meaning of Watergate."

Oklahoma's presidential preference primary election is on March 6th, Super Tuesday. Forty-three delegates are at stake in the republican primary, and recent polling by Sooner Poll puts former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum far in front of Newt Gingrich, with Mitt Romney in third and Ron Paul a distant fourth. The poll also showed that Santorum has the highest favorability, but is rated even with Romney as the candidate most favored in the general election. Sooner Poll brought together three political experts to discuss the latest poll results, and here's some of their analysis in this ONR Extra.

When the legislative session begins in February, lawmakers will be faced with crafting a budget for the 2013 fiscal year. The legislative session will begin on February 6th, but lawmakers are already working at the state capitol. The sunset review process requires state agencies, boards and commissions to appear before a committee of legislators to justify their continued existence. If the committee votes to shut down a state agency, board or commission, the entity involved has one year to settle is affairs and close down operations.

The Obama administration recently announced plans to cut U.S. defense spending by almost half a trillion dollars over the next ten years as part of a strategy to reduce the size of the federal budget and re-position the military. That amount could double if automatic cuts triggered by the failure of the deficit-reduction super-committee to reach an agreement go into effect.
