2012

In this program, we'll meet Oklahomans who turned to legal system for help with a problem, and the lawyers who assisted them. We'll learn about an innovative program in Tulsa that assists families as they go through a divorce. Participants will explain why the help they received made a difference for their children, and why they believe the program should be expanded statewide. We'll talk to a couple who need a new roof after suffering a devastating Oklahoma hailstorm, only to discover that their insurance company was unwilling to pay their claim. We'll meet a man who found he had no place to live after he struggled to turn his life around after his release from prison. We'll update you on a program providing free legal assistance to military service members and veterans. And our studio audience will have their legal questions answered by a panel of legal experts.

Domestic Violence “Mary” was trapped in an abusive marriage. Her husband beat and choked her in front of her two young children, but like many women in similar situations, she feared her abuser would turn even more violent if she left. Despite limited financial resources, she finally gathered the courage to escape, with the help of two non-profit organizations, the YWCA and Legal Aid. You’ll meet Robin Wilson, the Legal Aid attorney who secured a divorce and protective order for Mary, and find out the steps she and her client took together to ensure the family’s safety as they move forward with their lives. Disability Law Kimberley Chidsey and her sister Leslie were running out of options. An on-the-job injury left Leslie unable to work, and her request for disability payments had been denied. She moved in with Kimberley and her family, a less than ideal situation for the sisters. Leslie was trapped in a downward spiral of depression, unable even to pay for needed medications. You’ll hear from Oklahoma City attorney Athlea Adkisson, who took on the case when the sisters appealed to a Social Security administrative law judge to get Leslie the help she needed. Military Assistance In autumn 2003, fighter pilot Mike Whetstone was deployed in one of the most dangerous parts of the world when he received some unwelcome news from back home. Facing a default judgment against him if he failed to appear in court, he hired an unknown attorney to represent him 5,000 miles away. Little did he know that the attorney, 2011 OBA President Deborah Reheard, would have the case suspended within an hour of their initial phone conversation. That case proved to be the inspiration for the new Oklahoma Lawyers for America’s Heroes program that will provide more that $1 million dollars worth of f
