There was a time in the US when virtually all children were homeschooled. But the modern homeschool movement started in the 1960s with some research that suggested compulsory schools might actually short circuit the educational process More modern issues like evolution, school prayer, and sex education have cause many families to seek alternatives to conventional schools. As a result, the number of Oklahomans who choose to educate their children at home is growing every year. Professional educators say homeschooled children are being left behind by their peers in public schools, and they say a lack of regulation in Oklahoma makes homeschool efficacy difficult to measure.
