Austin City Limits

Nick_LoweTonight's episode of AUSTIN CITY LIMITS with Nick Lowe and The Swell Season was originally recorded in late 2008. It premiered on many PBS stations in January 2009, but we were in our pledge drive at that time. So, tonight's broadcast is the premiere of this episode.

For more than forty years, Nick Lowe has been writing songs, influencing musicians and gaining fans worldwide. In recent years the Englishman's work has shifted focus placing him more as a balladeer than a rocker. You'll hear him tonight sing the following:

  • When I Write the Book
  • All Men Are Liars
  • I Trained Her to Love Me
  • I Read a Lot
  • Rome Wasn't Built in a Day
  • Peace, Love and Understanding
  • Beast in Me
  •

Swell_SeasonGrammy recipients have appeared on AUSTIN CITY LIMITS numerous times, but it's a rare thing for Oscar winners to grace the stage in studio 6A. But that is indeed the case in tonight's episode with Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglová, also known as The Swell Season. The duo starred in the indie film Once, in which they played struggling musicians. The song "Falling Slowly" on the Once soundtrack won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

    Tonight, The Swell Season performs:

  • Lies
  • When Your Mind's Made Up
  • Falling Slowly
  • Low Rising
  • If You Want Me
  • Life in Vain (with Daniel Johnston)
