"Top Chef Master" Rick Bayless on OETA
Written by Holly on Thursday August 20, 2009
Oklahoma City's very own Rick Bayless is in the national spotlight today after winning the title of Top Chef Master last night on the Bravo channel's reality series, but OETA viewers have known his talents all along.
Rick grew up working at his family's barbecue restaurant, the Hickory House. He got his education in Spanish and Latin American studies and moved to Mexico for a few years. Then he and his wife came back to the US and opened a couple of popular restaurants in Chicago and later in California. He has written a number of award-winning cookbooks, including "Mexico - One Plate at a Time," a companion to his first season on public television, which won the James Beard Award for Best International Cookbook.
Rick's $10,000 prize will go to his own nonprofit organization, Frontera Farmer Foundation, which helps small, sustainable farms in the Midwest by providing them with capital development grants.
OETA's viewers can see Rick every Saturday morning at noon on MEXICO - ONE PLATE AT A TIME WITH RICK BAYLESS. Join Rick this Saturday for "Quest for Fire" when he cooks over an open flame. He'll grill chicken on an improvised oil-drum and makes easy chorizo, potato and mushroom tacos. Mmmmm.
